Kutumba

October 14, 7 - 10 pm: Kutumba, Nepal's premiere folk group at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Blacksburg

October 14th: Workshop at 2:00 (Center of Dance on Turner St in Collegiate Square)
Concert at 7:00 (Unitarian Universalist Church)

Kutumba is a folk instrumental ensemble of six professionals from Kathmandu. Having come together for the preservation of their culture and art, Kutumba spreads the love and joy of Nepali folk music throughout the world. Self-motivated and self-driven, Kutumba is a group with their own unique sound and vision. The six members have different roots and backgrounds in music. Kutumba is the harmony of traditional roots, culture and new sounds.

The word 'Kutumba' holds a special meaning in the Nepali language. It stands for a unique bond amongst community members. As their name, Kutumba is all about bringing together traditional folk tunes and instruments with new and improvised sounds and ideas.

"No other band in Nepal has gone to such an extent to cross cultural boundaries and promote inter-regional, inter-caste, inter-ethnic exchanges through music. "
- Anna Stirr, Ethnomusicologist, Oxford University.

The proceeds from Kutumba US tour will support ongoing construction of Jyotidaya Cooperative School in Nepal. Learn more about the school.

Workshop sponsored by the Department of English, the College of Liberal Artis and Human Sciences Advisory Committee on International Initiatives, the Department of Religion/Culture, The Center for the 21st Century, the Institute for Policy and Governance, and the Department of Theater and Cinema.
